Old Map of Venice by Sebastian Münster, first published 1550
One of the earliest widely published bird’s-eye views of Venice, this remarkable woodcut presents the city surrounded by the waters and islands of the Venetian Lagoon.
The dense city is filled with churches, towers, palaces and tightly packed houses. St Mark’s, the Doge’s Palace and the Campanile appear near the waterfront, while Murano, Burano, Mazzorbo and several smaller islands are named beyond the city. Boats and sailing vessels move through the lagoon, emphasising Venice’s dependence upon water for travel, trade and defence.
A fascinating Renaissance map for anyone with a connection to Venice or an interest in early city views, Italian history and sixteenth-century cartography.A stunning certified FINE ART PRINT on heavy textured art paper — not a poster
Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.
Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!
The Old Map Company of Great Britain offers a vast and carefully curated collection of the very finest expertly reproduced vintage maps. Sebastian Münster’s view of Venice was first published in Basel in 1550 as part of his influential Cosmographia. The book brought descriptions and images of cities, countries and peoples to a wide European readership, and its view of Venice became one of the earliest detailed representations of the city available in a printed geographical work.
Map Details
The city is shown as a tightly built collection of islands divided by canals and enclosed by the lagoon. The principal waterways, quays and concentrations of buildings are clearly distinguished, although the perspective is pictorial rather than measured like a modern town plan.
St Mark’s waterfront appears on the right, where the buildings labelled Palatium represent the political heart of the Venetian Republic. Churches, towers and monastic sites rise above the mass of houses, giving the viewer a sense of Venice’s extraordinary architectural density.
Beyond the city, Münster names several lagoon settlements and islands, including Murano, Burano and Mazzorbo. Their inclusion is important because Venice depended upon this wider network for industry, food, religious life and navigation.
Sailing boats and smaller craft occupy the waters around Venice. They convey the constant movement that sustained the city: merchandise arriving from the Adriatic and Mediterranean, passengers crossing between islands and local boats travelling through shallow lagoon channels.
The view also marks the mainland and the entrance from the Adriatic. Venice therefore appears not as an isolated group of buildings but as the centre of a complex maritime landscape.
Two substantial Latin text panels occupy the foreground. They describe Venice’s unusual setting, its canals, public buildings, churches, monasteries and commercial importance.
Their prominent position reflects the purpose of Münster’s Cosmographia: the image was intended to be read alongside geographical and historical information. The result is both an early map of Venice and a sixteenth-century account of why the city was considered exceptional.
