Authentic Old Map Paper & Accurate Colour Reproduction

Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!

Historical Background

Joan Blaeu’s map brings Holy Island, the Farne Islands and the Northumberland shore together on one sheet. Published in Amsterdam in the mid-1640s, it presents a coastline whose islands and mainland landmarks had been linked by religion, royal power and travel by sea for centuries. Its Latin title, Insula Sacra, means “Holy Island”, followed by the familiar English names of the island and the Farnes.

Map Details

  • Original title: Insula Sacra; vulgo Holy Iland; et Farne.
  • Publisher: Joan Blaeu, Amsterdam.
  • Date: Circa 1645; surviving atlas examples are catalogued between 1645 and 1648.
  • Area shown: Holy Island (Lindisfarne), the Farne Islands and the adjoining Northumberland coast.
  • Orientation: North at the top, labelled Septentrio.

Lindisfarne and the Northumbrian Kingdom

In 635, King Oswald invited Aidan from Iona to establish a monastery on Lindisfarne. Bamburgh, shown on the mainland, was a centre of Northumbrian royal power: the monastery’s position placed its community close to the king while giving it the seclusion of a tidal island. Lindisfarne became an important centre of Christian learning, where the celebrated Lindisfarne Gospels were made in the early eighth century.

The Viking attack of 793 brought that community sudden devastation. In 875 the monks left with St Cuthbert’s remains, which eventually reached Durham. A later priory renewed the island’s monastic life, but it was suppressed in 1537, more than a century before Blaeu published this map. The engraving therefore records a landscape already carrying many layers of religious history.

St Cuthbert and the Farne Islands

The two island groups are connected through Cuthbert’s life as well as their geography. After serving at Lindisfarne, he withdrew to Inner Farne as a hermit in 676. He later became Bishop of Lindisfarne, then returned to Inner Farne, where he died in 687. Looking between Holy Island and the Farnes on the map makes the setting of that history easier to picture.

Reading Blaeu’s Coastal Map

Holy Island is coloured pink in this example, with the Farne group set separately in the water to the southeast. On the mainland, Bamburgh Castle supplies a recognisable landmark. The coastal outline, settlement symbols and older place-name spellings invite comparison with a familiar modern landscape, while the broad sea area gives the islands particular prominence.

Blaeu balances this geographical detail with an ornamental title cartouche at the lower left and a large royal coat of arms at the upper right. The sailing ship animates the open water between the coast and the islands. Together, these details make the print appealing at a distance and rewarding to examine closely: a decorative view of the Northumbrian coast with its historic places still waiting to be found.
