Historical Background
Christoph Weigel’s map brings together two ways of seeing Corfu: an island chart above and a detailed waterfront panorama below. Published in Nuremberg around 1720, the engraving identifies its subject with the classical name Corcyra and the familiar name Corfu. Weigel’s name appears within the title panel as publisher.

Corfu and the facing mainland
The narrow channel separating Corfu from the mainland is an important part of the composition. The coast opposite is labelled Epirus, with mountain ranges drawn inland. These historical regional names should not be read as modern national boundaries: the coastline shown faces both present-day Albania and north-western Greece.
Across the island, Weigel uses small pictorial mountains to describe the terrain. The coloured shoreline makes its long, irregular shape particularly clear, while the town is marked on the eastern coast as “Citta di Corfu”.
The fortified town and harbour
The panorama below provides a closer view of the island’s principal town. “Castell Vechio” and “Castell Novo” identify the Old and New Fortresses, rising above walls, waterfront buildings and clustered rooftops.
Large oared vessels and smaller boats occupy the foreground. This harbour scene gives the print much of its character: it shows the island as a place approached from the sea, with its defences and buildings forming a recognisable waterfront silhouette.
The decorated title
At the upper right, a lion holding a sword stands above the title, surrounded by figures, weapons and a distant scene of conflict. The decoration adds a martial theme to an otherwise geographical map, balancing the island chart with the fortified town shown below.
