Historical Background

The title of this map identifies two historic territories: the Lordship of Mechelen and the Duchy of Aarschot. Its coverage extends across part of Brabant, taking in Antwerp and Brussels as well as the towns named in the title. The map credits Michael Florent van Langren, a mathematician in royal service, and belongs to the Blaeu atlas tradition.

Mechelen stands out within its separately coloured territory, while the surrounding settlements show how closely connected this part of the Low Countries was. Antwerp occupies the north-western side of the map and Brussels lies towards the south-west. Leuven and Diest extend the view eastwards, giving the print a broader geographical interest than its title alone suggests.

The historical boundaries are an important part of its character. Brabant provides the wider regional setting, but the Lordship of Mechelen and Duchy of Aarschot had their own identities. The coloured outlines make those divisions visible without turning the map into a flat diagram: rivers, woodland and miniature town plans remain prominent throughout.

The upper-right title cartouche contains figures and heraldic decoration, while the distance scales occupy the upper part of the sheet. At the lower left, the Latin text is presented in a separate ornamental panel. The combination of geography and written account is typical of an atlas intended to describe a place as well as locate it.

Van Langren’s name is worth noticing. The inscription attributes the underlying mapping to him, while Blaeu supplied the publishing context. Keeping those roles distinct gives a more accurate account than treating every map in a Blaeu atlas as a survey made personally by the publisher.

Related atlas copies survive from different seventeenth-century editions. Because this reproduced face is undated, an exact year should not be inferred from the design alone. The print preserves the decorative detail and restrained regional colouring that make the map attractive both as a historical document and as a piece for the wall.
