Old Map of Zurich by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg, 1581
Zurich’s walls, towers and red-roofed houses spread across both banks of the Limmat in this detailed bird’s-eye view. Bridges connect the two halves of the city, boats occupy the water and cultivated ground rises beyond the fortifications. Ornamental panels and two figures in period dress frame the scene. Reproduced as a fine art print and supplied unframed, it rewards a close look at the streets and waterfront of the sixteenth-century city.

Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.
Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!
The Old Map Company of Great Britain offers a vast and carefully curated collection of the very finest expertly reproduced vintage maps. The Limmat runs across the centre of this view, separating two closely built parts of Zurich. Bridges, waterside buildings and boats make the river the organising feature of the composition. Beyond the roofs, the enclosing walls and towers mark a clear boundary between the city and cultivated countryside.
The viewpoint combines a plan-like account of streets with the raised façades and roofs of a city prospect. It allows the viewer to follow routes through the built-up area while still recognising individual towers and larger churches. The repeated red roofs make the blocks of housing particularly easy to distinguish from gardens and open spaces.
Along the river, buildings crowd the banks and extend close to the bridges. Small craft give the water an active role in the picture. The enclosing defences, with regularly spaced towers, curve around the outer districts; beyond them, strips of cultivated land climb towards the hills. That contrast makes the limits of the sixteenth-century town immediately apparent.
An elaborate heraldic panel occupies the upper left, balanced by the Latin title at the upper right. The heading uses both classical and vernacular forms of Zurich’s name. At the bottom, two figures in contemporary dress bring the scale back from the city as a whole to its inhabitants.
This view belongs to Braun and Hogenberg’s series of city images. Its interest lies in the combination of close architectural observation and decorative presentation, rather than the conventions of a modern street map. The print preserves both the urban detail and the landscape around the walls.
