by Pieter Goos
Created in Amsterdam and typical of Pieter Goos richly illuminated work. Insets of the North South Poles feature left and right at the base whilst in between an illustration that is a work of art in itself depicts several emblematic characters who individually represent the four seasons. Note the seaborne cherubs creating gentle winds whilst the sun and moon are beautifully illustrated amongst the clouds through which exotic birds of all sizes take flight. The ornate inner title pieces have unusual decorations of birds and fish. Geographical inaccuracies were not uncommon in these times and interestingly California is shown as an island and the northwestern portion of North America is omitted altogether. A rich and thoroughly engaging old map of the world.
