Old World Maps

Historic maps of a world still being discovered

Explore our collection of old world maps, created during the seventeenth century when cartographers were still assembling a picture of the globe from the reports of merchants, navigators and explorers.

The collection includes richly engraved maps by John Speed, Willem Blaeu, Henricus and Jodocus Hondius, Pieter Goos, Nicolaes Visscher and Gerard van Schagen. Most use the classic double-hemisphere format, with the known world surrounded by sailing ships, celestial diagrams, allegorical figures and scenes representing the seasons, continents or elements.

A fascinating record of geographical discovery

Look closely and these historic maps reveal a world that was far from complete. California may appear as an island, Australia is shown with unfinished coastlines, vast southern lands remain speculative and parts of the polar regions are left almost entirely blank.

What now appear to be geographical errors are among the maps’ most absorbing features. Each one records what was known, believed or imagined at a particular moment in the history of exploration and mapmaking.

Decorative world map prints

The balanced hemispheres, finely engraved lettering and elaborate borders give these maps a particularly strong decorative presence. They work equally well in a study, library, home office or living room, while their wealth of small details rewards close inspection.

These are fine art reproductions of genuine historical maps rather than modern designs simply made to look old. Each edition preserves the colour, engraved detail and character of its original and is supplied unframed, allowing you to choose a frame suited to your own interior.
