Old Map of Teviotdale published by Joan Blaeu, 1654
The rivers of the Scottish Borders weave through this finely engraved map, linking a dense pattern of settlements, wooded grounds and small hills. Kelso, Jedburgh and Selkirk provide recognisable starting points, while the many lesser names invite a closer look at the countryside between them. A figured title panel and illustrated scale frame the lower corners. Reproduced as an unframed fine art print, it preserves the detail and character of Blaeu’s seventeenth-century Scottish atlas.

Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.
Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!

The Teviot and the neighbouring river valleys give this map its intricate structure. Streams branch between small settlements, enclosed woodland and scattered hills, while the Tweed helps define the northern part of the district. The sheet extends beyond the Teviot valley itself into adjoining parts of the Borders.
Kelso stands by a prominent bend near the right-hand side, while Jedburgh appears farther south in the closely marked interior. Selkirk helps locate the valleys to the north-west. Between these larger names, the engraving records many smaller places, giving the map its particular interest for readers with connections to the Borders.
Wooded enclosures and small hill symbols interrupt the river network. Towards the upper left, a group of lochs and upland features contrasts with the more densely settled eastern valleys. Coloured boundary lines help distinguish the mapped district from neighbouring areas, including Liddesdale along the lower edge.
The original inscription credits the survey material used for the engraving, while the publisher’s name appears separately. The university catalogue identifies the design with Blaeu’s Scottish atlas of 1654, correcting the earlier date and publisher stated in the current product description. A first-publication date should still be distinguished from the year of any individual atlas impression.
The lower corners contain two different decorative scenes: figures surround the title on the left, and a man with surveying instruments accompanies the scale on the right. These details balance the dense place-name coverage. For family or local history, the print is useful as a record of historical geography and spellings, although it should not be treated as proof of a particular person’s residence.
