After Sofia became Bulgaria’s capital in 1879, population growth and industrial development drove repeated extensions to the city plan. The Sofia History Museum records especially rapid expansion in the early twentieth century. In 1938, the municipality approved the Musmann master plan, which set out an ambitious framework for streets, transport and green spaces; the Second World War prevented its full implementation. This is useful context for reading the map’s routes and outer neighbourhoods, but it does not establish that this particular sheet is the Musmann plan.
Compare the ordered streets near the centre with the less regular edges of the built-up area. That contrast helps show the practical work of connecting older quarters with newer suburbs. The plan is especially rewarding as a print because its fine network of streets and named places invites close inspection.
