Centred around the area of Lake Garda and Trevisa this is both a most refined and striking map that is notable for its wonderful graphic content. Carefully reproduced by The Old Map & Clock Company on a heavy parchment stock paper.
A stunning certified FINE ART PRINT on heavy textured art paper — not a poster
Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.
Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!

This handsome map of the Alps was published in 1899 and covers a remarkable sweep of Europe, from the French Alps in the west to Austria and the Adriatic coast in the east.
What makes it especially appealing is the way the mountain landscape has been drawn. The shaded ridges, deep valleys and darker peaks give the map a real sense of height and movement. Lakes, rivers and coastlines are picked out in blue-green, standing out beautifully against the warm brown and ochre tones of the land.
Look closely and you can trace your way through Switzerland, northern Italy, the Tyrol, the Dolomites, Piedmont and the great Alpine ranges. The Po Valley lies stretched beneath the mountains, while the Mediterranean and Adriatic coasts give the map a much wider geographical setting than many Alpine maps.
It is a wonderfully atmospheric piece. From a distance, it has the character of an old landscape painting; closer up, there is an extraordinary amount of geographical detail to explore. It would look particularly at home in a study, ski chalet, country house or simply on the wall of anyone who loves the mountains.
For some, it may bring back memories of Alpine journeys, snowy villages and long afternoons in après-ski bars — occasionally with a furry friend joining in the fun.
The original image has been carefully prepared by The Old Map Company to produce a fine art reproduction that preserves the map’s aged colouring, intricate detail and late Victorian character.
A distinctive historic map for skiers, walkers, travellers and anyone with a lasting affection for the Alps.
