Old Map of Munich by W. B. Clarke, 1832
A finely detailed old map of Munich, drawn by architect and cartographer W. B. Clarke and published in 1832 under the supervision of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.
The historic centre is surrounded by the expanding nineteenth-century city, with the River Isar, English Garden, royal buildings, roads and planned suburbs clearly delineated. A panoramic view along the lower border shows Munich from the east, its church towers and rooftops rising beyond the river.A stunning certified FINE ART PRINT on heavy textured art paper — not a poster
Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.
Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!
The Old Map Company of Great Britain offers a vast and carefully curated collection of the very finest expertly reproduced vintage maps. Our range includes works by renowned cartographers such as John Speed and Willem Blaeu, covering Scotland, England, and beyond. Historical Background
Published in 1832, this map records Munich during the reign of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, when the city was being reshaped through ambitious programmes of architecture and urban expansion. The compact historic centre remains clearly defined, while new streets, gardens and monumental buildings spread into the surrounding districts.

The Historic Centre
Munich’s old city occupies the centre of the plan, distinguished by dense blocks of buildings and a coloured line following the former line of its defences. Within it, the principal churches, public buildings, courtyards and streets are rendered individually.
The twin-towered Frauenkirche is among the landmarks represented within the centre. The royal Residenz and adjoining Hofgarten stand near its northern edge, marking the close relationship between the city and the Bavarian court.
A City Expanding Beyond Its Old Boundaries
By 1832, Munich was extending well beyond its historic core. The map shows the more spacious planned streets of Maxvorstadt to the north and west, including new squares and public buildings associated with Ludwig I’s transformation of the Bavarian capital.
The geometrical street pattern contrasts sharply with the irregular medieval streets inside the old city. This makes the map especially valuable as a record of Munich during its transition from a compact royal town into a larger nineteenth-century capital.
The English Garden and River Isar
The English Garden occupies a substantial green area to the north-east. Created from the late eighteenth century, it provided an extensive landscaped park beside the city and remains one of Munich’s best-known public spaces.
The River Isar dominates the eastern side of the plan. Its broad, divided channels, islands, bridges and adjoining settlements are shown before later engineering works imposed a more controlled course upon the river.
The Panoramic View
A long prospect beneath the map is titled View of Munich and depicts the city from the east. The viewer looks across the Isar towards Munich’s skyline, where church towers and prominent public buildings rise above the closely packed roofs.
The combination of detailed plan and panoramic view gives the print both geographical and pictorial interest. It allows Munich to be understood from above while also showing how the city would have appeared when approached from across the river.
The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge
The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was established in London in 1826 to make reliable educational material available at an affordable price. Its city maps were produced with unusually fine engraved detail and often included architectural views or panoramas.
W. B. Clarke, an architect and skilled draughtsman, prepared numerous European city plans for the Society. His Munich map formed part of its subscription series and was later included in collected atlas editions.
