Old Map of Luxembourg by Willem and Joan Blaeu, seventeenth century
The historic Duchy of Luxembourg fills this richly labelled map, extending into a wider landscape of rivers, wooded country and neighbouring territories. Luxembourg, Trier, Namur and other towns appear among coloured boundaries and small engraved hills. A lion decorates the title panel, balancing the dense detail of the main sheet. This fine art reproduction shows the duchy in its regional setting, rather than within the borders of the modern Grand Duchy.

Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.
Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!

The title Lutzenburg Ducatus identifies the Duchy of Luxembourg, and the geography extends well beyond the outline of the modern state. Blaeu places it within a wider network of neighbouring towns and rivers, making the sheet as much a regional map as a map of Luxembourg itself.
Luxembourg appears within a landscape threaded by rivers and densely marked with settlements. Trier lies towards the eastern side, with the Moselle providing a recognisable geographical reference. Namur and the Meuse help locate the country to the north-west, while Metz appears farther south. These surrounding places make clear that the map’s coverage is broader than its title alone might suggest.
Groups of small trees and engraved hills occupy the spaces between towns. The rivers can be followed through this pattern, while coloured lines distinguish territories. The combination gives the land a textured appearance: settlement, woodland and relief are all represented, though without the standardised symbols or measured contours of a modern topographic map.
The lion beside the lower title cartouche provides a heraldic focus. Nearby, the Amsterdam imprint names Guiljelmus and Ioannes Blaeu, the Latin forms of Willem and Joan. This visible inscription supplies a firmer attribution than a date guessed from the appearance of the colouring.
Historical boundaries are central to the interest of the print. The viewer can begin with familiar towns, then compare their position within the old duchy and its neighbours. It is best read as a seventeenth-century presentation of that regional geography; the coloured divisions should not be treated as an outline of today’s Luxembourg. Successive atlas printings also make it important to distinguish the securely identified design from the still unconfirmed date of this particular impression.
