Old Map of Livonia from the Blaeu atlases, seventeenth century
Riga, the Gulf of Finland and the islands of the eastern Baltic fill this richly coloured map of Livonia and its neighbours. Ships cross the sea between Sweden and the Baltic coast, while heraldic shields, rivers and historic place names add detail across the land. Published in the Blaeu atlas tradition, the map covers much of present-day Latvia and Estonia within a wider Baltic setting. Reproduced as a decorative fine art print and supplied unframed.

Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.
Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!
The Old Map Company of Great Britain offers a vast and carefully curated collection of the very finest expertly reproduced vintage maps. Livonia, Vulgo Lyefland brings together the eastern Baltic coast, the Gulf of Riga and the lands towards Lake Peipus. Its coloured divisions and regional names belong to seventeenth-century geography, rather than today’s national borders. The sheet was issued within the Blaeu atlas family; the National Library of Latvia records an example published in Amsterdam in 1640.
The sea occupies a large part of the composition. Stockholm and the Swedish coast appear at the left, southern Finland runs across the top, and the Gulf of Finland leads east towards Ingria. The islands labelled Ösel and Daghö help divide the open Baltic from the more enclosed coastal waters.
Riga is marked at the head of its gulf, with rivers reaching inland through the territories named Livonia and Curonia. Lake Peipus forms a prominent feature towards the eastern side. Following these waterways and old regional labels offers a more revealing reading than trying to impose modern borders on the sheet.
Heraldic shields identify surrounding territories, while sailing ships and sweeping sea lettering fill the open water. The crowned title cartouche anchors the lower corner. Together, these details give the map a strong decorative balance while preserving a closely named record of the Baltic region as represented in a Dutch atlas.
