Historic map showing Bosnia, Serbia, Hungary and the Danube

Old Map of Bosnia and the Danube Region

Price range: £35.55 through £59.95

Old Map of Bosnia and the Danube Region by Jean Janvier, circa 1780

This engraved French map is centred on the Kingdom of Hungary, with Bosnia shown among the neighbouring lands of south-eastern Europe. Its full title names Upper and Lower Hungary, Transylvania, Slavonia and Croatia; the sheet also reaches across Serbia, Wallachia, Moldavia and other territories around the Danube. It is a broad regional map, rather than a map confined to modern Bosnia.

The Danube and its tributaries form the map’s central route through the landscape. Coloured boundary lines separate historic territories, while engraved hills and rivers describe their terrain. Look for the French title cartouche at the upper right, the three-language scale and key at lower left, and the coordinate frame around the plate. Period spellings such as “Transilvanie” and “Esclavonie” preserve the vocabulary of the original map.

Reproduced as a fine art print, this old map of Bosnia offers a richly labelled view of the shifting political geography of central and south-eastern Europe. It is supplied unframed.

Authentic Old Map Paper & Accurate Colour Reproduction

Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!

Historical Background

Jean Janvier’s map presents the Kingdom of Hungary as the centre of a much wider Danube region. Its French title identifies Upper and Lower Hungary, Transylvania, Slavonia and Croatia, while the engraved sheet extends to neighbouring Bosnia, Serbia, Wallachia and Moldavia. The Danube connects these territories across the composition, making the map useful both as a view of Hungary and as an old map showing Bosnia in its regional setting. The catalogue record for this Janvier–Lattre map dates it to 1780; surviving atlas issues and imprints can vary.

Map Details

  • Original title: Le Royaume de Hongrie, divisée en Haute et Basse Hongrie, Transilvanie, Esclavonie et Croatie
  • Cartographer: Jean Janvier
  • Publisher: Jean Lattre, Paris; associated with the Atlas moderne
  • Date: circa 1780
  • Area shown: The Kingdom of Hungary and neighbouring territories, including Bosnia, Serbia, Transylvania, Slavonia, Croatia, Wallachia and Moldavia
  • Map features: Engraved plate, hand-coloured boundaries, pictorial relief, coordinate frame, title cartouche, scale and key

Hungary and its neighbouring territories

The map’s political geography is expressed through a hierarchy of named regions rather than modern national borders. Upper and Lower Hungary occupy the centre, with Transylvania to the east and Slavonia and Croatia to the south. Bosnia and Serbia appear farther south, beyond the Hungarian core. Wallachia and Moldavia are also labelled east of the Carpathians. These names help explain the title’s scope: Janvier is depicting the lands associated with the Hungarian crown and the adjoining territories that shaped its strategic setting.

Place-names appear in French forms and in spellings that differ from those used today. “Transilvanie” and “Esclavonie” are examples visible on the plate. They are not errors to be silently modernised; they show how a French atlas reader of the eighteenth century would have encountered the region. The many town labels make the sheet rewarding to explore at close range, even where present-day national boundaries would suggest a simpler outline.

The Danube as the map’s organising line

The Danube and its tributaries thread through the map, linking the central European lands with the Balkans and the Black Sea approaches. Rivers are not merely decorative here: they help the viewer follow distances and connections across a broad area. Engraved hill symbols and mountain chains mark the rougher terrain, while coloured boundary lines distinguish administrative and historical divisions. Together, these devices turn a crowded political map into a readable picture of how waterways, uplands and borders intersected.

Engraving, colour and atlas design

The French title cartouche sits in the upper-right corner, balanced by the scale and explanatory key at lower left. A latitude and longitude frame surrounds the map, giving its many place-names a measured structure. Hand colour adds distinction between territories without obscuring the fine engraved linework. The combination of a formal title, compact explanatory elements and extensive regional coverage is characteristic of an atlas plate intended to be consulted as well as displayed. This reproduction retains those details for close inspection, from the network of rivers to the older spellings and boundary colours.
