Historical Background
The plan of Moscow at the upper left immediately sets this map apart. Its enclosed streets and walls contrast with the much broader geography around it, while a smaller waterfront view of Archangel appears on the right. These two insets connect the principal city of inland Russia with a northern port in the same composition.

The sheet belongs to the mapping tradition associated with Hessel Gerritsz., whose name appears in Latin form in the dedication. Blaeu later issued the map under his own imprint. This distinction explains why an early date within the engraved title can appear on a map published later: the date of a design and the date of an individual impression need not be the same.
Moscow is shown as a separate plan, with a lettered key beside it. That enlarged treatment makes the city’s enclosures and internal arrangement visible at a scale the main map could not accommodate. Archangel is presented differently, as a low waterfront prospect. Above it stand three figures in dress selected by the mapmaker, adding another visual account of the region.
In the main panel, waterways thread through extensive groups of tree symbols and numerous settlements. The Baltic lies towards the left, while the Caspian Sea occupies the lower right; the coverage reaches far north towards the Arctic coast. These recognisable features help orient a view that encompasses only part of the enormous territory associated with Russia today.
The print preserves the combination of geographic information, urban illustration and formal dedication characteristic of this sheet. It is particularly rewarding to compare the finely enclosed Moscow plan with the more open treatment of forests and rivers beyond the towns.
