John Speed’s A Newe Mape of Poland
John Speed’s A Newe Mape of Poland is one of the most decorative English maps of seventeenth-century Eastern Europe. First prepared for Speed’s atlas A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, the map was based partly on the influential work of Gerard Mercator and was adapted for an English audience.
A stunning certified FINE ART PRINT on heavy textured art paper — not a poster.
A richly detailed old map of Poland by the celebrated English cartographer John Speed. Known as A Newe Mape of Poland, this remarkable seventeenth-century map combines a closely engraved view of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth with city prospects, regional costumes, coats of arms and a portrait of King Sigismund III Vasa.
Covering Poland together with parts of Prussia, Lithuania, Silesia, Bohemia, Pomerania and western Russia, it preserves historic place names, political divisions, rivers and settlements from a period when Poland occupied a far greater area of Europe than it does today.
Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.
Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!

My apologies for the very late reply. I wanted to reach out to thank you so much for rushing my order. My partner absolutely loved it. I am amazed with the service so that is a five-star from me. I wish you all the best.
The map portrays the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and neighbouring territories, extending from the Baltic Sea in the north to Silesia and Bohemia in the south, and eastwards towards Lithuania and Russia. Poland appears alongside regions including Prussia, Pomerania, Mazovia, Podlachia and parts of Livonia, reflecting the very different political geography of seventeenth-century Europe.
Across the upper border are engraved views of important cities, including Kraków, Gdańsk, Poznań, Krosno, Sandomierz and Wrocław. At the centre is a portrait of King Sigismund III Vasa, who ruled the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth during much of John Speed’s lifetime. The side borders are filled with figures dressed in Polish, Silesian and regional costume, together with the arms of Poland and Silesia.
These decorative borders make the map especially rewarding to study. It is not simply a geographical record but a carefully composed picture of Poland’s cities, people and political identity as understood by a seventeenth-century English mapmaker.
The many old spellings and former boundaries also make it an absorbing choice for anyone interested in Polish history, family origins or the changing geography of Central and Eastern Europe.
