Old Map of The Philippines

Old Map of the Caroline Islands

Price range: £39.95 through £49.95

Old Map of the Caroline Islands — Carte des Nouvelles Philippines, eighteenth century

This unusual French map spreads the islands historically called the “New Philippines” across the western Pacific. Small coloured island shapes and closely set names fill the sheet, while parts of Samar, Mindanao and the northern Moluccas provide reference points along the left edge. The historic title refers chiefly to the Caroline Islands, rather than to a complete map of today’s Philippines. Supplied unframed as a fine art reproduction.

Fine Art Map Reproductions – Museum-Quality Printing

Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.

Authentic Old Map Paper & Accurate Colour Reproduction

Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!

Historical Background

The title Carte des Nouvelles Philippines can be misleading to a modern reader. The main subject is the scattered island world east of the Philippines, historically described in European sources as the New Philippines and associated with the Caroline Islands. Only parts of the Philippine archipelago appear at the left-hand edge.

Map Details

  • Original title: Carte des Nouvelles Philippines
  • Period: Eighteenth century
  • Mapped region: Caroline Islands and neighbouring western Pacific islands
  • Edition evidence: A matching map is catalogued in an Amsterdam travel-history volume of 1761, published by Arkstée and Merkus
  • Attribution limit: The exact publication and maker of this reproduced impression have not been confirmed

Samar and Mindanao act as reference points on the western margin, with the northern Moluccas farther south. Across the rest of the sheet, islands are shown as separate coloured forms, usually with a name beside them. The broad spacing and repeated small shapes produce a very different composition from a map dominated by one large landmass.

Latitude figures run along the sides, and the equator crosses the lower part of the map. Those marks supply a geographical framework, but the island arrangement should not be treated as a modern survey. Historical European maps of this region could preserve uncertain identifications and positions; the labels and outlines are evidence of the map’s period.

The restrained layout leaves room for the island names. There is no elaborate figured cartouche: the title sits in a simple rectangular panel, and the coloured border encloses the dispersed geography. The limited palette helps separate adjacent islands without introducing modern national boundaries.

This reproduction is best understood as a historical view of Micronesia and its western neighbours. Its particular interest is the older naming and arrangement of the islands, together with the way a European travel publication located them in relation to better-known coasts. A purchaser seeking a complete map of Luzon and the modern Philippines should be aware of this narrower, different subject.
