Old Map of the Canary Islands by Fielding Lucas Jr., 1823
Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura take their place beside La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro in this finely engraved old map. Yellow colouring picks out the mountainous islands against a pale blue sea, with a large compass rose and part of the African coastline completing the composition.
Look closely for Santa Cruz, La Laguna and Las Palmas, and older island names including Teneriffe, Lancarota and Ferro. Reproduced as a fine art print and supplied unframed, it makes a thoughtful piece for anyone with a fondness for the Canary Islands.

Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.
Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!
The Old Map Company of Great Britain offers a vast and carefully curated collection of the very finest expertly reproduced vintage maps. This old map of the Canary Islands was published by Fielding Lucas Jr. in Baltimore in 1823. Its seven principal islands spread across a pale blue sea, with mountainous interiors picked out in yellow and dark engraved shading. Tenerife occupies the centre-left, Gran Canaria lies below the compass rose, and Lanzarote and Fuerteventura extend towards the African coast.
Tenerife is labelled Teneriffe, and its mountainous centre dominates the island. Santa Cruz and the name San Christoval de la Laguna appear on its north-eastern side. Along the northern shore, smaller settlements and coastal points invite a closer look at the island before modern resort development.
To the west, La Palma appears simply as Palma. La Gomera is marked Gomera, while El Hierro retains the older name Ferro. These spellings are part of the map’s character and preserve the geographical vocabulary used by its English-speaking atlas readers.
Gran Canaria’s nearly circular outline encloses a dense pattern of mountain shading, with Las Palmas named on the north-eastern coast. Farther east, Lanzarote is labelled Lancarota; the small islands beyond its northern end are included rather than separated into an inset. Fuerteventura stretches southwards, its long shape contrasting with the more compact western islands.
Closely spaced lines surround the shores, giving the water a rippling appearance. They are part of the engraving’s coastal treatment: they should not be read as modern, measured depth contours. The effect unifies the scattered islands across the sheet.
The upper border reads East Longitude from Ferro. Rather than using Greenwich as its reference, this map measures longitude from the western island of the group. The numbered grid therefore offers another reminder that familiar places were once mapped within different geographical conventions.
A prominent compass rose fills the open sea between the islands, while the African coastline enters at the lower right. The small title panel and warm paper border balance the detailed island engraving. Together, these features make an absorbing antique map for someone with a connection to the Canaries, or memories of time spent on Tenerife, Gran Canaria or the neighbouring islands.
