Historical Background
Cram presents the Samoan islands as a chain across the Pacific, with Savai‘i and Upolu on the left and Tutuila and the Manu‘a group farther east. The island names are accompanied by German or United States labels, placing the map within the colonial division of the archipelago at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The two largest western islands are printed in green, with relief marks and numerous names around their shores. Apia is identified on Upolu. On Tutuila, Pago Pago appears among a dense group of coastal labels. The distribution of names makes the coastline the easiest route into the map’s local detail.
An alphabetical place index occupies the upper part of the sheet. Its letter-and-number references correspond to the grid around the border, allowing a reader to move from a name to its position on the map. Rose Island is isolated in a boxed inset at the upper right, making room for a distant part of the archipelago without reducing the scale of the principal islands.
The German and United States inscriptions describe colonial claims and administration, not the origins of Samoan society. They are particularly useful clues to the period represented, while also showing how an American atlas publisher organised the islands for its readers.
The printed population and area figures are historical statements on the sheet and should not be read as current statistics. Together with the index, grid and modest decoration, they give the map the practical appearance of a reference atlas. Its visual interest comes from the long island chain and the concentrated detail along each coast.
