This richly illustrated old map of London presents the capital at the close of the seventeenth century, following the work of the celebrated engraver Wenceslaus Hollar.
The city stretches along the River Thames from Westminster and St James’s in the west to the Tower of London in the east, with Whitehall, Covent Garden, the City and Southwark shown in remarkable detail.
Decorative views of royal palaces, city gates and important buildings frame the map, together with the arms of the City of London and a double portrait of William III and Mary II. The result is both a fascinating record of historic London and an exceptionally decorative fine art print.
Small: 19.5″ × 14″ | Medium: 24″ × 18″ | Large: 31″ × 24″ A stunning certified FINE ART PRINT on heavy textured art paper — not a poster
Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.
Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!

This old map of London captures the capital during a period of dramatic change. The rebuilding that followed the Great Fire of 1666 had reshaped much of the City, while Westminster, Whitehall and the growing districts to the west were becoming increasingly important centres of royal, political and fashionable life.
The River Thames dominates the map, crowded with boats and serving as London’s principal highway. North of the river, the closely packed streets of the City contrast with the more open ground around St James’s, Hyde Park and the developing western suburbs. Across the water lie Lambeth, St George’s Fields and the streets of Southwark.
Among the most appealing features are the illustrated views arranged along the upper and lower borders. These include royal palaces, halls, exchanges, city gates, equestrian statues and the Tower of London. The double portrait of William III and Mary II helps place the map in the years following their accession to the English throne.
Wenceslaus Hollar was born in Prague and became one of the finest engravers of seventeenth-century London. He lived and worked in the city for many years and was particularly admired for his architectural views, town plans and precise topographical detail. This plan is associated with the celebrated Van der Hagen atlas collection and is generally dated to the late 1680s.
For anyone interested in the history of London, its lost streets and buildings, or the changing relationship between the City, Westminster and the Thames, this is an unusually rewarding and decorative map.
