Old map of Mexico and New Spain, published by Mathew Carey in the early nineteenth century
Mexico, Texas and New Mexico share the sheet on this map of New Spain, with the long peninsula of California to the west and the Gulf of Mexico to the east. Coloured boundaries divide the mainland, and an inset carries the geography south through Central America towards Darien.
The title Mexico or New Spain and the old regional names record a landscape very different from today’s national borders. Reproduced on textured fine art paper, it makes a rewarding print for anyone with ties to Mexico or an interest in the history of North America.

Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.
Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!

Mexico or New Spain belongs to Mathew Carey’s Philadelphia atlas publishing of the early nineteenth century. The map design is documented in his 1814 General Atlas. It places Mexico within the wider geography of Spanish New Spain, with Texas and New Mexico still shown in the same cartographic setting.
The paired names in the title are central to reading this map. New Spain was a Spanish colonial jurisdiction, whose northern territories extended into areas now within the United States. The outline therefore cannot be read as a map of the modern Mexican republic.
New Mexico runs north around Santa Fe, while Texas occupies the northeastern part of the mainland. Sonora, Durango and other named divisions appear farther south. Fine lines trace rivers and settlements through these territories, with short strokes indicating mountain ranges.
The longitude scales use Philadelphia along the top edge and London below. This is a distinctive detail of the map’s American publishing context: readers could locate the same place through two reference meridians.
The inset in the upper right continues the geography southwards through Central America. It allows the sheet to include the narrow lands towards Darien without reducing the scale of the main map. Alongside the California peninsula, the Gulf coast and the coloured boundaries, it gives this engraving a character quite different from a modern outline map of Mexico.
