Old Map of Helsinki

Price range: £35.55 through £59.95

Helsinki by C. W. Gyldén, published in 1837

This old map of Helsinki records the Finnish capital under its Swedish name, Helsingfors. Coloured city blocks, numbered references and detailed keys identify streets, public buildings and named quarters, while a separate inset places the town within its surrounding country.

The North and South Harbours, Katajanokka and the rocky ground around Ullanlinna reveal a city still closely shaped by its peninsula. Published before the railway arrived, the plan preserves shorelines and open outskirts that later development transformed.

Reproduced as a fine art print, it is an absorbing historical view for anyone with a connection to Helsinki, an interest in Finnish history or a fascination with how cities grow.

Authentic Old Map Paper & Accurate Colour Reproduction

Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Historical Background

C. W. Gyldén’s Plan af Helsingfors, published in 1837, records Helsinki while it was developing into the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland. The city’s Swedish name, Helsingfors, appears in elaborate lettering beneath a crowned coat of arms. Coloured blocks, numbered references and two extensive keys turn the sheet into a detailed guide to the streets and public buildings of a capital still surrounded by open, rocky ground.

Map Details

  • Original title: Plan af Helsingfors utgifven 1837 af C. W. Gyldén
  • Mapmaker and publisher: C. W. Gyldén
  • Lithographic printer: F. Tengström
  • Publication: Helsinki, 1837
  • Area shown: Central Helsinki, its harbours, nearby islands and surrounding country in a separate inset
  • Original scale: Approximately 1:8,000
  • Orientation: North at the top of the principal plan
  • Format: Coloured lithographic town plan
  • Reference information: Numbered city blocks and a lettered key to public places and buildings

A Capital Taking Shape

Helsinki became the capital in 1812, replacing Turku as the administrative centre of the Grand Duchy. Gyldén’s plan appeared twenty-five years later, when the transformation was well advanced but far from complete. The regular street grids and prominent public spaces show the ambition to create an ordered capital rather than allow a town to expand entirely by gradual accident.

Johan Albrecht Ehrenström prepared plans for the new city, while Carl Ludvig Engel designed its principal buildings. Their work had to accommodate a difficult setting of bedrock, uneven ground and water. Gyldén’s sheet makes that tension visible: straight streets and rectangular blocks sit beside coastlines and hill forms that refuse to conform to the same geometry.

Colour, Numbers and the Names of Blocks

The coloured areas distinguish groups of blocks across the town. Pink occupies much of the north-eastern grid, yellow the central streets and blue a substantial area farther west. Within these areas, numbers connect individual blocks with the long reference list in the upper-left corner.

This is a particularly enjoyable feature for close study. The list gives block names as well as numbers, allowing the reader to move between a location and its nineteenth-century designation. It is a different way of navigating from modern street-address mapping and preserves an administrative vocabulary that would otherwise be easy to overlook.

A second key at the right identifies public places and buildings. Its letters appear across the plan, distinguishing significant sites from the surrounding urban fabric. The two keys together explain why the map contains much more information than its attractive colouring first suggests.

The Harbour City

The waters east and south of the centre are labelled Norra Hamnen and Södra Hamnen—the North and South Harbours. Their shorelines help define the shape of the capital, with the peninsula of Skatudden, now Katajanokka, extending eastwards into the water.

Small islands appear off the southern shore, including the forms labelled Blek Holmarne. The relationship between developed streets and open water is especially clear here. Helsinki’s later expansion involved extensive shoreline alteration, so the plan is useful for comparing the nineteenth-century city’s outline with the much more built-up waterfront of today.

Hills at the Edge of the Grid

South of the principal blocks, the Ulrikasborgs Trakten is represented by conspicuous rounded hill forms. Farther west, similar relief symbols surround roads, open plots and waterside features. These areas contrast with the tightly ordered centre and give the plan a strong sense of a city growing into its natural surroundings.

The ground was a practical obstacle, not simply picturesque scenery. Building streets and foundations required work on the rock, and some routes followed easier terrain. The map lets visitors see why the capital’s planned geometry could never completely erase the character of its peninsula.

Before the Railway

The 1837 date places this plan before the Helsinki–Hämeenlinna railway opened in 1862. There is no central railway station or railway approach slicing through the urban landscape. Travel and trade are instead understood through the roads, harbours and regional connections visible on the sheet.

The small inset at the lower left widens that perspective beyond the compact town. It shows surrounding roads, settlements and coastal geography, helping readers place the detailed city plan within its wider setting.

Reproduced as a fine art print, Gyldén’s map rewards comparison at several scales: the individual named block, the developing capital and the surrounding coast. Its interest lies in that precise moment when Helsinki’s new urban order was emerging, while the older shoreline and rocky margins remained plainly visible.
