Fine Art Map Reproductions – Museum-Quality Printing

Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.

Authentic Old Map Paper & Accurate Colour Reproduction

Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!

Historical Background

John Speed’s map of Flintshire combines the Dee estuary and the historic county with two town plans and an architectural view of St Winefride’s Well. Its compact geography is balanced by ships, heraldry and richly framed insets, making this one of the particularly varied maps in the Welsh county series.

Map Details

  • Original title: Flint-Shire
  • Mapmaker: John Speed
  • Engraver: Jodocus Hondius
  • Map date: c. 1610; first published in Speed’s The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine in 1611
  • Edition reproduced: Later Bassett and Chiswell state, associated with the 1676 edition; their publisher’s imprint is visible on the map
  • Area shown: Historic Flintshire and its detached southern portion; plans of Flint and St Asaph; St Winefride’s Well

Flint and St Asaph in miniature

The plan of Flint at the upper right shows the castle beside the water and the town’s ordered pattern of streets within its surrounding ditches. Below, the separate plan of St Asaph places its cathedral among streets, gardens and the river. Each inset has its own scale in paces: they are independent town views, not simply enlarged portions of the county map.

St Winefride’s Well at Holywell

The architectural inset along the lower edge is labelled St Winefrids Well. It shows the decorated structure over the well, with arches and traceried windows rendered in unusual detail for a county map. This distinctive feature complements the nearby settlement of Holywell on the main map and gives the print an interest beyond boundaries and place names.

The Dee estuary and detached Flintshire

The estuary is prominently labelled, with sailing ships and a sea creature in the patterned water. The main county lies beside Denbighshire and Cheshire, but a detached portion of Flintshire appears farther south, around Bangor and Overton. The map preserves that historic arrangement rather than today’s administrative boundaries. Hills, rivers and settlement symbols give plenty to explore across the inland landscape.

Reproduced as a fine art print and supplied unframed, the map preserves the original’s engraved detail and warm appearance.
