Old Map of Egypt

Old Map of Egypt by John Cary, published in London on 1 June 1805

Cary’s New Map of Egypt from the Latest Authorities combines a broad view of the country with a separate enlarged map of the Delta and adjacent parts. The main sheet follows the Nile through the desert toward the Mediterranean, while the inset gives the river’s branching lower course and settled delta greater prominence. Together they show both Egypt’s long north–south geography and the concentrated landscape around the river mouth.

Engraved settlements and relief are set within a coordinate frame, with coloured outlines distinguishing boundaries. An oval title cartouche sits within the main map; the enlarged inset makes a striking contrast in scale beside it. The Red Sea and neighbouring desert add context to the river valley, which remains the map’s organising feature.

This detailed nineteenth-century fine art reproduction is a distinctive choice for anyone drawn to Egypt, the Nile or the history of cartography. Supplied unframed.

Authentic Old Map Paper & Accurate Colour Reproduction

Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!

Historical Background

John Cary’s A New Map of Egypt, from the Latest Authorities was published in London on 1 June 1805. The main map presents Egypt within north-eastern Africa and the eastern Mediterranean, while a separate inset, The Delta and Adjacent Parts upon an Enlarged Scale, brings the lower Nile into closer view. The two panels are designed to be read together: one shows the long course of the river through the desert, and the other enlarges the region where its branches spread toward the coast. The title’s phrase “latest authorities” reflects Cary’s claim to use current geographic sources at the time of publication.

Map Details

  • Original title: A New Map of Egypt, from the Latest Authorities (with) The Delta and Adjacent Parts upon an Enlarged Scale
  • Cartographer and publisher: John Cary, London
  • Date: 1 June 1805
  • Area shown: Egypt, the Nile valley and delta, with adjacent parts of north-eastern Africa and the eastern Mediterranean
  • Map features: Main regional map with an enlarged Delta inset, coordinate frame, engraved relief, settlements and oval title cartouche

The Nile valley and delta

The Nile is the map’s central geographic line. Against the surrounding dry terrain, its valley gathers settlements along a narrow corridor from the interior toward the Mediterranean. The separate inset enlarges the delta, where the river divides into multiple branches and supports a much denser pattern of towns and cultivation. This difference in scale is practical as well as visual: the main map establishes Egypt’s position and extent, while the inset gives the lower river the detail it needs.

The Mediterranean coast and Red Sea provide context for the river’s route. Engraved place-names and relief describe the land on either side of the Nile, while the coordinate frame helps orient a reader moving between the broad map and the close inset. Cary’s sheet brings the country’s distinctive geography into focus without treating the desert as empty space: routes, settlements and neighbouring regions remain part of the picture.

Mapping Egypt in 1805

The map was issued a few years after Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt, at a time of heightened European interest in the region. Cary’s “latest authorities” wording belongs to a competitive atlas market in which publishers presented maps as current, useful accounts of distant places. The map should not be mistaken for a modern survey, but its paired views show how a commercial atlas could combine a broad regional picture with a detailed inset for a key area.

Engraving and layout

An oval title cartouche is set within the main map, and the enlarged Delta panel creates a second focal point on the sheet. Fine engraved hachures suggest relief; coloured outlines separate boundaries without obscuring the river or the place-names. The layout balances practical geography with a clear decorative element. On the reproduction, the change in scale between the Egypt map and its delta inset is one of the first details to notice, followed by the dense network of branches and settlements in the lower Nile.
