Old Map of Bohemia by Blaeu, 1645

Price range: £35.55 through £59.95

This beautifully detailed old map of Bohemia was published by Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam in 1645 as part of the celebrated Blaeu atlas tradition. It depicts the historic Kingdom of Bohemia, centred on Prague and covering much of the western and central Czech Republic. Towns, villages, rivers, forests and mountain ranges are recorded throughout the region. Prague appears prominently near the centre, surrounded by the many settlements and districts that formed the Bohemian kingdom. Decorative coats of arms, an elaborate title cartouche and subtle hand colouring make this a particularly attractive example of seventeenth-century Dutch mapmaking. The map would make a distinctive gift for anyone with Czech or Bohemian ancestry, a connection with Prague, or an interest in the history of Central Europe. The Library of Congress lists a 1645 edition of Le theatre du monde under Joan Blaeu and identifies related Bohemia maps with both Willem and Joan Blaeu. Willem created much of the underlying Blaeu cartography, while Joan continued the publishing house after Willem’s death in 1638.

Authentic Old Map Paper & Accurate Colour Reproduction

Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!

Towns and Places Shown on the Map

The map centres on Prague and records numerous towns, settlements, rivers, forests and mountain districts across historic Bohemia. The territory broadly corresponds to the western and central regions of the modern Czech Republic, although its boundaries and place names reflect the political geography of the seventeenth century.

Bohemia in the Seventeenth Century

Bohemia was one of the principal lands of the Bohemian Crown and formed an important part of the Habsburg territories in Central Europe. Prague had long been a major political, religious and cultural centre, while the wider kingdom contained prosperous towns, mining districts, forests and agricultural regions.

The map appeared during the final years of the Thirty Years’ War, a conflict that had begun in Bohemia with the Defenestration of Prague in 1618. The defeat of the Bohemian forces at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620 brought the kingdom more firmly under Habsburg control. By 1645, warfare was still affecting much of Central Europe, making this map a record of Bohemia during one of the most turbulent periods in its history.

Cartographer and publication note

Willem Blaeu established one of the most celebrated mapmaking and publishing houses of the Dutch Golden Age. Following his death in 1638, the business was continued by his sons, principally Joan Blaeu. This map appeared in the 1645 Atlas Novus, which was issued under the names of Willem and Joan Blaeu.
