Antique Celestial Chart – The Sun’s Path Around Earth, 1660

Price range: £29.95 through £59.95

This extraordinary celestial chart by Andreas Cellarius illustrates the apparent spiral path of the Sun around the Earth. First published in Amsterdam in 1660 as Plate 17 of the celebrated Harmonia Macrocosmica, it reflects the astronomical theories used to explain the changing position of the Sun through the seasons.

The broad coloured band represents the zodiac, while the central diagram, cherubs and classical decoration make this one of the most visually striking plates in Cellarius’s atlas.

Printed individually in our Cornwall workshop using archival pigment inks on textured fine art paper, it makes a distinctive statement piece for a study, library or contemporary interior.

Fine Art Map Reproductions – Museum-Quality Printing

Unlike most online offerings, our maps are produced entirely in-house, not outsourced to print-on-demand or drop-shipping services. This allows complete control over quality while offering better value. Each map begins with a high-resolution original, carefully enhanced and printed to order using archival papers and pigment inks for exceptional clarity, depth, and longevity. Every piece is personally overseen — no map leaves our workshop unless it is of a quality we would be proud to display ourselves.

Authentic Old Map Paper & Accurate Colour Reproduction

Paper choice is essential to the authenticity of our maps. We use specially sourced 190gsm paper made in the UK from pure materials and traditionally pressed with natural woollen felts. This process creates a subtle, randomly textured surface that closely resembles an original antique document. Likewise the use of premium quality ink fully saturates the paper, producing remarkable clarity, depth, and historical character. Colour fastness and sharpness will remain good for in excess of 100 years!

The Sun’s Spiral Path Around the Earth Andreas Cellarius published this chart in his famous celestial atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica in 1660. Its Latin title, Solis Circa Orbem Terrarum Spiralis Revolutio, describes the apparent spiral revolution of the Sun around the Earth. The diagram reflects an Earth-centred interpretation of the heavens. The Sun appears to move north and south through the year as it travels between the tropics, while the coloured zodiac band records the constellations through which its apparent path passes. Cellarius combined scientific diagramming with elaborate decoration. Cherubs, clouds and coloured title banners surround the central chart, transforming a complex astronomical theory into a highly decorative work of art. Although the scientific model belongs to an earlier understanding of the universe, the print remains valuable as a record of seventeenth-century astronomy and as an exceptional example of Dutch Golden Age engraving.
