Based on the work of Ptomely in the 2nd century this truly ethereal work of art carefully combines the Earth and the Heavens; in this case the Northern Hemisphere, with charming cherubs looking down upon the astrologers of the time at work. Drawing on Ptomely’s observations (note the inclusion of The Great Bear) Serpentarius painted as the Greek God of Medicine, grasping a deadly snake and to the bottom of the map is the Argo Navis – galley of Jason and the Argonauts in their search for the Golden Fleece. An outer circle charts the path of the sun around the earth and here we find the six northern signs of the Zodiac.
