Jean de Beins was a French military engineer and one of the most accomplished regional cartographers of the early seventeenth century. Appointed geographer and engineer to the king, he surveyed the strategically important Alpine frontier during the reigns of Henri IV and Louis XIII. His landmark map of Dauphiné was drawn in 1617 and first appeared in print in 1622. This later issue was published in Amsterdam by Henricus Hondius around 1630.
The map’s original title translates as “Map and General Description of Dauphiné, with the Borders of the Neighbouring Countries and Provinces”. Dauphiné was the historic French province centred on Grenoble and extending eastwards into the Alps, broadly covering the modern departments of Isère, Drôme and Hautes-Alpes.
The Rhône valley forms the western side of the map, with Lyon, Vienne, Valence and numerous smaller communities identified along the river. Grenoble occupies a central position among the Alpine valleys, while Gap, Embrun and Briançon appear farther east. The neighbouring territories of Savoy, Bresse, Provence and Piedmont are marked around the edges.
Dramatic rows of individually engraved mountains dominate the eastern half of the map. They are accompanied by rivers, roads, settlements and early administrative boundaries. The arms of Dauphiné and Savoy appear within the map, together with an ornate title cartouche, a distance scale and a large dedication to the king.You may also like…
