Description
Bolton’s first railway station was opened in 1831 by the Bolton and Leigh Railway Company (B.L.& R) as detailed on the clock face. The first passenger train departed on 2nd June 1831 being an excursion to the Newton Races. Scheduled services followed a week or so later on 13th June 1831. During 1871 it operations were temporarily re-located to Crook Street Goods Yard whilst a major architectural refurbishment was undertaken to upgrade it to more elaborate Italian styling.
It was fully reopened in 1875 with four platforms and a roof that being a very modern innovation in those days. At this time a new line connected to Manchester Exchange via Walkden.
In common with the rest of the rail network services began to decline in the mid 1950’s and soon activity became limited to football and holiday specials and 1964 saw the gradual removal of tracks and closure and by 1966 the station was sadly demolished.
