BARNSLEY STATION HISTORY
Originally part of the South Yorkshire Railway (SYR) network during which time the station traffic had increased significantly during the industrial revolution moving coal across the nation. It enjoyed significant modernisation in the early 1900’s with the line falling into LNER’s management.
Passenger movement increased sensationally from the 1930’s onwards particularly during World War ll when it became an important hub for troop movements and war time supplies transportation. But like so many of its neighbours Barnsley Station saw significant post war decline in use with the increased usage of roads for both freight and passenger transport.
As railway usage returned to popularity in the late 1900’s the station was more or less reborn becoming a vital hub for connections to Sheffield, Leeds, and Manchester and saw a £7 million upgrade.
